Active Release Techniques (ART) is a hands-on system of care that is highly effective for sports injury rehabilitation. Practitioners (usually chiropractors) spend hundreds of hours training and becoming certified in ART.
The ART system includes hundreds of protocols for soft tissue in the arms, legs, torso, and spine. This includes muscles, tendons, and ligaments, as well as fascia, nerves, and connective tissues.
Providers of Active Release Techniques use their hands and fingers to locate dense, thickened, or tight tissues.
After identifying the problem tissues, the chiropractor will use precise tension and a specific movement to lengthen the soft tissue. To ensure lasting results, your chiropractor may combine this technique with other modalities or specific rehabilitation exercises.
Active Release Techniques has been proven effective in treating conditions like shoulder impingement, carpal tunnel syndrome, and sciatica, as well as back and neck pain.
If you believe an imbalanced or overused muscle causes your condition, ART may be the best option.
When a muscle is overused, scar tissue forms that can restrict mobility. Scar tissue can also irritate nerves or cause nerve entrapment, and blood vessels that supply oxygen and blood to tissues may become blocked.
These situations can be very painful. However, once the tissues have been released, and the muscle’s balance restored, things improve.
Ask our chiropractors about Active Release Techniques. Our chiropractors are all certified ART providers. ART is used as a regular part of your chiropractic visits at Una Vita when appropriate.
ART works by breaking up adhesions, which are dense collections of scar tissue that form when muscles and connective tissues are injured. When the scar tissue binds between your muscles, it limits flexibility, causing pain and stiffness in muscles and joints.

Should of written this review a long time ago!! Dr.Barone is one of the best Chiropractor’s I’ve been too!! I started going to him almost 20yrs ago! He has a way of making the “body great again”!! He is attentive, knows what he is doing, and has an awesome way of making you feel comfortable. I live in Calgary now and if I had the time and money I’d spend it to go see him again!! Miss this guy! Oh and if you can tell him a good joke his laugh is fantastic!! Hahahaha
I highly recommend Una Vita Chiropractic for friendly and professional care. I have been seeing Dr. Gary Barone for almost a month and I have been very impressed with the experience and results. The initial visit incorporated a thorough consultation and several scans using up to date technology. The follow-up consultation was thorough and the findings were very interesting, presented in video format which is great to refer back to. I have already felt a significant improvement in my upper back and shoulder, and I am amazed by how much better I feel after each visit.
I have been seeing Gary Barone for many years. He has never failed in returning me to feeling free and loose. I am a golfer and every now and then I have serious back pain which his treatments relieve the problem almost instantly. I would recommend Gary to anyone who has back and or neck issues. Without chiropractic care I would not be able to enjoy an active lifestyle that I have now.
Dr. Barone and the wonderful staff at Una Vita Chiropractic have been incredible helping me with my spine alignment and back issues. He has always been attentive to my pains and offered very informative sessions to address those pains, as well as providing additional materials to help alleviate flare ups. Both my physical and mental health have improved immensely over the years with Una Vita, thank you all very much!
I really appreciate the care and attention Dr. Barone gives towards my health. He is very passionate about creating a healthy community through Chiropractic care. Been working with Dr. Barone for 10 years and I have been sleeping better, feeling better, and have improved at sports (hockey and golf). Shaun
